PARKERSBURG – A Parkersburg man was arrested early Sunday morning on a murder charge following a fatal shooting in Parkersburg which claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman.
Dakota David Ryan Mackey, 21, of 706 Neal St., Parkersburg, was being held on charges of felony murder and possession with intent to deliver controlled substances, said Parkersburg Police Chief Joe Martin.
Martin said no bond was set Sunday in Wood County Magistrate Court on the murder charge since it is a capital offense. Bond for the possession charge was set at $200,000.
Martin said officers were dispatched to 706 Neal St. at about 12:04 a.m. Sunday in reference to a shooting. Officers arrived on scene within two minutes and discovered that a 20-year-old female had received a gun shot wound to her chest.
They were confronted by the boyfriend of the victim, Mackey, who would not comply with officers’ commands, Martin said. Officers immediately recognized a loaded semi automatic pistol lying on the bed in which the victim was lying beside. Officers were attempting to render aid to her and Mackey refused to remove himself from the bedroom so officers could assess her injuries.
Officers had to forcibly remove Mackey from the bedroom and at that time he began to fight with the officers. The officers used minimal force to handcuff Mackey and remove him from the residence, Martin said.
Officers were then able to secure the residence and allow EMS personnel to attempt to render aid to the victim. The victim was unfortunately unable to be resuscitated, Martin said. The residence was secured by uniformed officers and detectives were called to the scene to begin an investigation.
A search warrant was obtained for the Neal Street home from Wood County Magistrate Joyce Purkey. As the residence was searched by detectives and Crime Scene Technician Ross Clegg lead Detective Doug Sturm began interviews at the police station. Detectives processed the scene and located evidence to support statements taken from witnesses as well as the arrestee, Martin said.
Detectives also located approximately 4.5 pounds of marijuana and several scheduled prescriptions medications inside the Neal Street residence, he said.
During the course of several interviews, it was discovered Mackey had delivered an opiate based prescription pill to the victim. A short time later, Mackey and the victim ingested the narcotic and at that time, Mackey brandished a .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol, loaded it, pointed it at the victim and fired the handgun. The single bullet struck the victim in the chest. This wound proved to be fatal, Martin said.
The victim, Dallas Marie White, and Mackey were not married but had two minor children together, Martin said. Representatives with the Department of Health and Human Resources/Child Protective Services were notified to assist with the investigation.
White will be sent to the State Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy, Martin said.
The investigation will continue to follow up with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms in regards to Mackey recently obtaining the pistol from a local dealer, to ascertain if additional charges may be applicable, Martin said.
