PARKERSBURG – The Mid-Ohio Valley Transit Authority approved the contractor for the new maintenance building during its Tuesday evening meeting, officials said.
The MOV Transit Authority voted unanimously to approve the lowest offered bid for construction of a maintenance building in Parkersburg, said said Tim Thomas, general manager of the transit authority. The low bid came from MIRC Construction Services, said Thomas. The Hurricane, W.Va., company’s winning bid was for $2.527 million, Thomas said.
The MOV Transit Authority received a $3 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration that is earmarked for the construction of the maintenance building, Thomas said. The MOV Transit Authority is obligated to match 20 percent of this grant with local funds, which earmarks $600,000 in local funds for the project.
The maintenance building will be constructed at 1312 12th St., Parkersburg, beside the Foodland store, Thomas said. The building will be used as a location for the maintenance of transit vehicles used for the Mid-Ohio Valley.
Transit authority members met with representatives of MIRC Construction Services on Thursday to review the project regulations, Thomas said.
There will be no official ground-breaking ceremony for the project, Thomas said.
“Assuming the weather holds, people should see activity on the site begin on Monday,” Thomas said.
The grant from the Federal Transit Administration for this project is not the government funding which subsidizes the local transit system, Thomas said.
“Like with any other transit system in America, ours is funded under a 50-50 matching obligation,” Thomas said.
The money earmarked for daily operation of the MOV Transit Authority is provided half by the federal government and half by the local levy.
