VIENNA – The Vienna Public Library held an end-of-the-summer scavenger hunt with a pirate theme.
The children’s event included a magic show, magic class, bicycle parade, crafts, tye dying shirts, comedy show and a ventriloquist. The summer reading program saw 411 children, 45 teenagers and 113 adults for the activities that took place throughout the summer. Everyone read 14,410 books in total from June 18 to Aug. 6, organizers said.
Children from two to 10, teenager and adult readers were involved in the process and read books based on their age group, library officials said.
By keeping track of the books they read over the summer, the children were eligible for prizes at the end of the program when it wrapped up on Aug. 6.
Children’s Librarian Holly VanCamp said the program went extremely well and the library is eager to kick off more similar programs this fall.
Bob Cordell, a volunteer and speaker with the library, said it is underrated what the public establishment does for Vienna. He said many people don’t know the library is there or they offer the free programs they do.
“It really is a community treasure,” Cordell said.
Alice Thomas, library director, said the programs are a large part of what the library means to the community.
Library officials gave way over 180 children prizes, 13 teen prizes and 13 adult prizes during the program.
Events scheduled for the fall include story time, Halloween and winter crafts. Another reading program will kick off at the library on Nov. 13 and last through Jan. 6.
