MARIETTA - Miley Knowlton, 17 of Marietta, is set to graduate this spring from Marietta High School as the first female graduate as an Eagle Scout with Troop 203. She is also the first female Eagle Scout with her troop and was selected for the Order of the Arrow. She is also an active member of the National Honors Society, Tri-M Honor Society, color guard, and the MHS Theatre Department.
Knowlton joined Scouts of America when she was in fifth grade and said she wanted to be the first female of Troop 203, and reflected on receiving the recognition of Eagle Scout.
"I feel very honored because I have worked my tail off for years trying to achieve this goal, and I’m so happy that it’s finally coming into light," she said, "I feel honored to be able to do things to help our community in a way that will continue on for years, and to be a girl (participating in Scouts of America) because that will inspire more younger girls to step up and do something just a little bit outside of their comfort zone."
Over the summer, she worked on her Eagle Scout project; creating a new storage unit in the Marietta High School Choir room for the storage of the hand bells for the bell choir. The project was organized by Knowlton who oversaw acquiring donations, materials and the building process.
Knowlton was also selected to be a member of the Order of the Arrow within Troop 203, the honor society of Scouting America, composed of Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives as elected by their peers.
Knowlton is a member of National Honor Society and joined because "I thought it was the best way to help our school community," she said. As a member she is a tutor to underclassmen and takes pride in being a role model for the younger students.
She said starting Oct. 1, NHS will also hold a drive for costume donations that will be distributed to "younger children throughout the Marietta Local School district, so that all kids can have a costume for Halloween."
Knowlton is also a member of the Marietta High School color guard, and joined after the encouragement of her friends in the marching band.
"I don't know how to play an instrument, so I chose to do color guard and I love its artistry with dancing and the silks, and I think it’s a beautiful sport to be in," she said.
Knowlton has been an active member in the MHS Theatre Department since seventh grade, said "(It's) how I met 90% of my friends and I just love being part of the theatre community within (Marietta High School) because it’s such a fun, loving, and tight community to be in." She said during the department’s production of "The Addams Family Musical" she was cast as Grandma Addams.
Knowelton hopes to attend The Ohio State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology, to become a pediatric psychologist. She said "I knew that I wanted to work with children but I didn't want to become a traditional teacher or nurse. So with some research, I found pediatric psychology because they work one-on-one with children in need.
