CHARLESTON - Three agencies in the region have been awarded recycling grants from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.
The state will award $70,480 to nine applicants through the Covered Electronic Devices Recycling Grant Program to be used for contractor services and legal ads supporting free recycling collections. Devices include electronics such as computers, tablets and televisions.
The Pleasants County Solid Waste Authority will receive $10,000, the Ritchie County Solid Waste Authority will receive $9,580 and Roane County will receive $2,650.
Other awards were to the Harrison County Commission for $10,000, the Lewis County Commission for $10,000, the Mingo County Commission for $10,000, the Monongalia County Solid Waste Authority for $7,500, the Preston County Solid Waste Authority for $9,000 and the Wayne County Solid Waste Authority for $1,750.
Covered Electronic Devices are devices with motion picture display screens diagonally measuring 4 inches or more. Devices that are part of or in motor vehicles, household appliances, or commercial, industrial or medical equipment are excluded.
In 2008, the WVDEP's Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan established the CED Program to ensure manufacturers follow disposal guidelines.
Fees imposed on manufacturers that have not adopted or implemented a free take-back and recycling program are deposited into the Takeback Fund and awarded to counties and municipalities to collection programs.
