MARIETTA - A Marietta man is leading in his group in an online contest to be chosen Super Dad for an Ace Hardware commercial.
Derek Games entered the contest in July and learned around mid-September his application was chosen in the first round of competition.
The notice encouraged dads to apply for the TV opportunity and for a chance at $25,000.
"I said, 'Well why not,'" Games said.
Games in his application said he would use the prize money to buy his wife, Drewlyn, a vehicle to make it easier for her to finish her nursing degree, establish a bank account for his stepdaughter, Emery Clark, 7, pay off some student loans and "even be able to squeeze a trip to Ace in there somewhere."
Games and his wife met five years ago when Emery was 2 and got married two years later.
He hopes people will appreciate how he stepped up to be a dad and being "the father image that every child needs in their life," Games said.
Games helps Emery with everyday things, like taking her to and from school and being there when his wife isn't.
"Just the dad stuff," he said.
He and Emery have also been reading "The Hobbit," the classic story by J.R.R. Tolkien about Bilbo Baggins and his journey from the Shire with Gandalf the wizard and dwarves to take their homeland and treasure from the dragon Smaug.
"We have been reading 'The Hobbit' at night together and watching the movies," he said.
Emery is a second-grade student at Washington Elementary School in Marietta. She enjoys his green beans.
"I like his cooking," Emery said.
Winners in the first group round go to the finals. The first round ends on Thursday.
