Registration open for Chalk the Block

PARKERSBURG - Registration is open to participate in the Oct. 10 Chalk the Block, a sidewalk art contest held during ArtOberfest, a celebration of the Parkersburg Art Center.
The cost for Chalk the Block is $5 and is open to teens and adults. An area for younger artists to join in the fun will be available, but only teens and adults who are registered are eligible for prizes.
To register and reserve a space on the sidewalk, go to https://www.parkersburgartcenter.org/new-products/p/chalk-the-block and complete the online registration form. Pay online or go to the Art Center during business hours and pay with cash.
The first 20 artists to register will get their name on a 24-color set of chalk pastels to use on Oct. 10.
The canvas will be a roughly 4-by-4 foot space on the sidewalk on Market Street between Eighth and Ninth streets. The Art Center will provide chalk and participants provide other supplies such as a stool, water, rags, brushes, tape measures and other items.
Work can begin as early as 1 p.m. Oct. 10, but all work should be finished by 5 p.m.
Those attending ArtOberfest that evening will be encouraged to walk the Chalk the Block and vote for the artwork.
People's Choice Awards will be offered in adult and teen categories. First- and second-place will be awarded prize packages, gift cards and cash up to $100 with prize packages to be awarded on Oct. 15.
If the weather doesn't cooperate, Chalk the Block will be moved to another date.

Artoberfest will be held from 5-9 p.m. Oct. 10 when the 700 block of Market Street comes to life with art and artful craft vendors under the big red umbrellas, food trucks, photo ops for families, art demonstrations, live music by three area bands, beer, wine and other surprises.
Participants can eat on the street or relax in one of three galleries.
The Art Center and The Market will be open during ArtOberfest as are other restaurants and businesses on the street. Donations for entry will be accepted at the gates at Eighth and Market streets or at Seventh and Market streets.
