PARKERSBURG - The AFL-CIO Appalachian Council Head Start Program in Wood County is taking applications for students at its Wood County sites, including a new, state-of-the-art building in Cedar Grove.
According to a release from the program, Head Start provides transportation, healthy meals and snacks, health screenings, developmentally appropriate educational experiences, family engagement, parent activities and support services to families of qualifying 3- to 5-year-old children at no cost to the family. The goal is school readiness and helping parents and children achieve empowerment and overall success, it says.
Parents of children enrolled in the program can also serve on the Policy Council, made up of Head Start parents and community members who help lead and make decisions about the program. The Policy Council meets regularly and works closely with the program’s Management Team and Oversight Committee to provide overall direction for the program. Members are elected by the parents of enrolled children.
More information is available or applications can be made by contacting Jennifer Reitmire at 304-561-1411. In addition to the Cedar Grove location, which consolidated four local Head Start centers, the program also has collaborative sites in Wood County Board of Education classrooms.
