PARKERSBURG - The AFL-CIO Appalachian Council Head Start is opening a new center in Wood County.

Four Head Start centers in the county have been consolidated into the newly renovated and expanded Cedar Grove Head Start, 490 Cedar Grove Road, Parkersburg, where a grand opening will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Appalachian Council Head Start serves 610 children in eight counties in West Virginia. Of those 610 children, over 170 are in Wood County.

More than half of the Head Start children in Wood County will receive services in this new building. The other children will receive services in pre-k classrooms through a collaboration with Wood County Schools.

The new building will have seven classrooms and house all Wood County management and program staff. More than 30 people will be employed there.

The Cedar Grove Head Start Center will provide: comprehensive education, health and family engagement services to over 100 children and their families; developmentally appropriate experiences focused on early education, social skills and creative expression to prepare children for school; transportation for children to attend the program; healthy meals and snacks to children daily; and opportunities for parents to meet with each other and be involved in making decisions about the program.

Since its formation in 1964, AFL-CIO Appalachian Council has offered programs to improve the quality of life for thousands of people in the Appalachian region. For over 50 years, the agency has provided education, training and a wide range of human resource development programs throughout the region including comprehensive child development, career transition and placement, vocational training and employee assistance programs.
