Civil War Roundtable of the Mid-Ohio Valley hosts field trip to Revolutionary, Civil War sites

MARIETTA – The Civil War Roundtable of the Mid-Ohio Valley is organizing a trip to several notable Revolutionary and Civil War period sites in Eastern Pennsylvania.

The "New Birth of Freedom Field Trip" will depart from Marietta and Parkersburg on Friday, Oct. 2, and return on Sunday, Oct. 4. The trip will feature locations such as Valley Forge, Philadelphia's historic district, the Museum of the American Revolution, Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and others, with interpretation by Scott Britton, executive director of The Castle Museum in Marietta. Britton's interpretation is based on original research on personal correspondence, published memoirs, official military records and other resources.

The purpose of the field trip is described as "to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of those with associations with the Mid-Ohio Valley region who served in American Revolutionary or Civil War period campaigns."

Featured locations will include: Valley Forge National Historical Park, King of Prussia, and site of the 1777-78 winter encampment of the Continental Army and Philadelphia's historic district, a UNESCO World Heritage City, to explore Independence National Historic Park replete with Independence Hall, historic homes, churches, cemeteries, museums, parks, neighborhoods, shops and restaurants. The original city is one of 266 UNESCO Heritage Cities worldwide and the only one in the U.S. The designation celebrates the city where democracy was first established and its importance to world culture. The registration fee provides for round-trip charter bus transportation, hotel accommodation, admissions to attractions, narrated tours of sites, a guide to recommended dining venues close to hotels, a suggested reading and viewing list and more.

The registration fee is $465 per guest for double-occupancy accommodations; or $565.00/guest for private accommodations. Registration is limited and accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
