Area Scouts enjoying time at Camp Kootaga

Around 130 Scouts from around the Kootaga District are enjoying summer camp at Camp Kootaga in Wirt County during the first season since the camp was bought by the Camp Kootaga Foundation from the Scouting USA Buckskin Council for use as a multi-purpose camp for Scouts and others. Many of the camp staff this week were made up of volunteer adult leaders who came in to teach many of the merit badge courses. Scouts worked on various merit badges, including swimming, lifesaving, canoeing, kayaking, camping, climbing, pioneering, wilderness survival, cooking, orienteering, shotgun/rifle, archery, basketry, robotics, cycling and more. Scouts were able to use the 95-foot rappelling tower, swim in the pool, learn Scouting skills and more. Temperatures reached into the 90s throughout the week and leaders were reminding the Scouts to drink lots of water and stay hydrated. Camp officials said the swimming pool was one of the most popular spots at the camp throughout the week.
