PARKERSBURG – The Captain James Neal Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution celebrated Flag Day on Saturday by presenting Flag Certificates.
Those receiving Flag Certificates this year were Hardee’s Restaurant, Kent Welding, Grace Gospel Church, Camden Clark Ambulance, Dobby and Dianna Thrash, South Parkersburg Public Library, Parkersburg Fire Station No. 5 and North Bend State Park.
Flag Certificates are presented to individuals, companies and government agencies that fly the United States flag for patriotic purposes only. The organization is appreciative of the respect displayed in celebrating the country’s 250th birthday this year.
Flag Day is celebrated each year on June 14 to commemorate the adoption of the first U.S. flag by the Continental Congress. The day was first proposed in 1861 during the Civil War, and President Woodrow Wilson issued the first presidential proclamation for Flag Day in 1916.
National Flag Day was established by Congress in 1949.
