PARKERSBURG – The Parkersburg Art Center will offer summer classes and workshops for adults and teens in painting, printmaking, pottery, drawing and mixed media in the studio and outdoors.
Early registration is recommended as some classes, which are beginner-friendly, begin the week of June 1.
Watercolor classes with instructor Virginia Killian will be held on Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park in the Art on the Island series. Participants will meet at the Point Park boat launch for the Valley Belle ride to the island for classes focused on florals, botanical drawing and painting, water and sky studies and watercolor landscapes, some using iridescent paints.
Registration includes the boat ride and materials. Participants can bring a picnic lunch and spend additional time on the island after class.
Additional Art on the Island programming includes a summertime rock painting workshop led by Tracy Love who will help students create small acrylic paintings with seasonal themes, including sunsets, water scenes, watermelon designs and fish illustrations. More classes are planned later in the summer.
The summer lineup also includes Gelli Plate Printing: Introduction to Masking and Stenciling with instructor Jessie Siefert. The workshop will introduce students to layering, texture, masking and stencil techniques to create original prints.
Students wanting to work with clay can register for Beginner Pottery on the Wheel, a four-week evening course introducing the basics. Participants will learn centering, forming cylinders, trimming, glazing and creating small functional pottery forms such as bowls and mugs.
Other summer offerings include Hello Summer Sweet Treats Sign, an outdoor acrylic painting class where participants will create and customize colorful summer-themed wooden signs.
In July, Project Yoga and the Parkersburg Art Center will present the Mid-Year Reset Yoga and Art Retreat designed for all experience levels. The daylong retreat, partially supported by a grant from the Highmark WV Foundation and sponsors from the community, will include yoga, meditation, breathwork, neurographic art, expressive painting, journaling and a catered lunch.
The Parkersburg Art Center this fall also will offer Draw What You See, a four-week observational drawing class for adults and teens. Killian will guide students through foundational drawing techniques while helping them strengthen observation skills.
For children and teens, the Art Center offers Camp Creativity summer programs. Camp Creativity provides week-long, half day art programs for students ages 4 through high school.
