PARKERSBURG — Another former sports editor for The Parkersburg News and Sentinel has passed away.
Carroll Jett, 75, a fixture in the local youth sports scene, died overnight Feb. 16 at a hospital in Morgantown.
“Carroll was the most seasoned sportswriter we had,” said Ken Davis, who wrote sports for the News.
“He came up with Brad Kincaid and James Snyder, the two greatest sportswriters ever in Parkersburg history. They mentored Carroll,” Davis said. “He was the only one of us who worked for both of those guys.”
Jett was involved in youth sports for many years as a coach, official, sportswriter and statistician and historian for Parkersburg High School football.
“Even after he retired, he still stayed active,” Davis said.
Jett’s passing follows the Feb. 1 death of Dave Poe, a retired sports editor for The Parkersburg News and Sentinel.
“There were two good ones right there in a month,” said Mike Hayden, who coached football at Parkersburg High and Parkersburg South.
“Caroll was very knowledgeable and a good friend,” Hayden said.
Jett officiated several sports, too, but was an excellent volleyball referee, Hayden said.
“He was one of the better ones we had in this state,” Hayden said.
Another contemporary of Jett’s, Jim Wharton, a retired sportscaster at WTAP, praised Poe and Jett.
“Those guys were the chroniclers of local sports for 30 to 40 years,” he said.
Jett also was active with the Wood County Recreation Commission.
“He played a vital role in organizing and running the WCRC volleyball program, investing countless hours behind the scenes and on site to ensure kids had the opportunity to learn, compete and grow,” the commission said on its Facebook page. “His commitment to recreation was never about recognition. It was about showing up and doing the work so that others could thrive.”
Jett is survived by his son and two grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending at Vaughan Funeral Home in Parkersburg.
