Warming stations available as Mid-Ohio Valley temperatures drop into the single digits

PARKERSBURG — People are being advised to dress warmly and find a place to get warm as the area could see temperatures in the single digits early this morning.
As of 7 p.m. Monday, local school closings included Belpre, Fort Frye, Marietta, Wolf Creek, Warren and Frontier, while two-hour delays had been announced for Wood, Wirt and Pleasants schools.
The region is under a cold weather advisory until 12 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service in Charleston. The advisory started at 9 p.m. Monday.
The advisory affects counties in the local area including Athens and Washington counties in Ohio as well as Wood, Pleasants, Tyler, Roane, Wirt, Calhoun, Ritchie and Doddridge counties as well as others throughout both states and portions of northeast Kentucky.
The advisory states there will be very cold wind chills as low as 10 below expected.
“The cold wind chills as low as 10 below zero could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken,” the advisory states. “Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures.”
People are advised to use caution while traveling outside and to wear appropriate clothing, a hat and gloves.
People are also being advised to keep pets indoors as much as possible.
Lows were expected to reach 9 with wind gusts as high as 20 mph for the Parkersburg area Monday evening into Tuesday morning with possible flurries.
Today it is expected to be partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 24. Wind chill values are expected to be as low as zero. Tonight it is expected to be mostly clear, with a low around 14.
Stacy DeCicco of the United Way Alliance of the Mid-Ohio Valley said warming stations are being set up at the Latrobe Street Mission at 1725 Latrobe St., Parkersburg; the Parkersburg Salvation Army at 534 Fifth St., Parkersburg; House to Home at 413 Eighth St., Parkersburg; and The Gathering at 1005 14th St., Parkersburg.
“You do not have to be a shelter resident to use the warming center,” she said.
The Latrobe Street Mission and Salvation Army’s warming centers will be open when the temperature drops below 32 degrees. House to Home opens from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at least through tonight. The Gathering is open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. at least through tonight.
Officials will evaluate conditions to determine if additional time is needed for the warming stations to be open.
