PARKERSBURG — National Wreath Day in America was observed Saturday in Parkersburg where wreaths were placed at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
The local Capt. James Neal Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution has been involved in the annual tribute at the cemetery where red-bowed wreaths are placed at graves of those who served in all branches of the military since the Revolutionary War.
Wreaths are purchased with donations, but while not all graves are able to be marked, the number of donors and participants is growing every year. To donate, please contact www.wreath adventures.org.
In this area, the non profit Wreath Adventures has worked to increase the number of wreath memorials throughout the counties of the Mid-Ohio Valley. The wreaths are purchased from Wreaths Across America in Maine and the preparation , decoration, delivery and placement of the wreaths is done by unpaid volunteers.
In Belpre, wreaths were also placed Saturday at Cedarville Cemetery.

National Wreath Day began in 1992 when a 12 year old boy from Maine who delivered newspapers won a trip to Washington, D.C., where he visited Arlington National Cemetery, a visit that impacted his life. In the beginning, he with help from his family’ s wreath business sent seven wreaths to each state to honor those who served. The movement has grown to more than 3 million.
