MINERAL WELLS — A program scheduled for Wednesday is intended to bring woodland owners, educators and nature enthusiasts together to look at ways to make woods healthier and more inviting to wildlife.
West Virginia University Extension Specialists Sheldon Owen and Dave McGill will share simple, practical ways to work with trees and other plants to improve forest health and attract birds, deer and other wildlife, according to a release from the WVU Extension, which is organizing the event.
The program, which is free and open to the public, starts at 6 p.m. at the Wood County 4-H Campgrounds at 2203 Butcher Bend Road in Mineral Wells. Program agendas are available at the WVU Extension Office by calling 304-424-1960 or stopping by the Fourth Floor of the Wood County Courthouse.
McGill, a forest resources extension specialist, will discuss how West Virginia’s forests grow and change naturally over time, shaped by succession and past land use. His presentation will also touch on who owns most of these woodlands and highlight common issues such as invasive species, pests and management challenges.
Owen, a wildlife specialist, will explain how different woodland features provide these essentials and why some areas attract more wildlife than others.
“The Woods and Wildlife Program is a great educational opportunity for local landowners and anyone interested in natural resource management here in the Mid-Ohio Valley”, said J.J. Barrett, WVU Agriculture extension agent. “No matter if you own a large tract of land or just a few acres, you can make a positive difference in the environment through planning and implementing simple stewardship practices.”
Another aspect of forest management that will be discussed at the program is timber harvest. Bids can vary dramatically, the release said, so it is important to actively market timber rather than sell to the first buyer who makes an offer.
Light refreshments will be served.
More information is available by contacting Barrett at the Wood County WVU Extension office at 304-424-1960 or jj.barrett@mail.wvu to register.
