Picture This: Volcano Days is Revving Up

Wood County Parks Director Jeremy Cross brought in a model of a hit-miss engine for the Wood County Commission to see as the county prepares for the 35th Annual Volcano Days this weekend at Mountwood Park. The festival commemorates the oil and gas history of the area as well as the oil boom town of Volcano which was home to 2,300 people before the town burned down in August 1879. The park now covers the area where Volcano once stood. The park has a newly renovated museum that discusses the history of the town as well as has working gas engines demonstrations. Cross said the annual festival will have 10 food vendors covering foods from popcorn to BBQ to ice cream as well as over 135 vendors selling a variety of items, including many handmade items. There will be live demonstrations including a blacksmith and a sawmill demonstration. Cross estimates they will have 6,000-7,000 visitors over today, Saturday and Sunday. Cross said today will be a little slow, the majority of people will be out there Saturday and they will have a bigger afternoon crowd on Sunday. The hours will be 4-7 p.m. tonight, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Easy Rider buses will be at the park transporting people from parking areas to the main event area.
