PARKERSBURG — More than 110 second-graders from Jefferson Elementary Center and their families participated Friday afternoon in PositiviTEA.

The event featured a formal tea setting with macaroons, cookies, cream puffs, a variety of tea and lemonade with an emphasis on kindness.

“Having formal tea and cookies with my mom is one of my favorite memories, and I wanted to provide that same opportunity for Jefferson students and their families,” said Misty Korkan, second-grade teacher and one of the event’s organizers.

All second-graders at Jefferson spent several weeks reading lessons from “A Kids’ Guide to Manners: 50 Fun Etiquette Lessons for Kids & Their Families” and learning the basics of manners and kindness, school officials said. The books were provided through Title I funding.

Speakers at the afternoon tea highlighted tips on good manners and challenged students to do something kind for someone else the following week.

“This was a wonderful way to involve families, have fun and provide a snack and tea as a practice for utilizing some of the manners learned over the past several weeks,” said Family-School Liaison Jody Carder Hamilton.
