PARKERSBURG — The sounds of the season will come alive this Saturday as the Smoot Theatre Youth Vocal Ensembles will present a Christmas Concert at 3 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church.

The featured choral groups are The Smoot Theatre Children’s Chorus (STCC), now in its fifteenth year, the Smoot Theatre Boys Ensemble (STBE), now in its thirteenth year, and the Smoot Theatre Girls Ensemble (STGE), currently in its tenth year.

The Children’s Chorus will begin with their traditional processional “Jubilate Deo” from the 17th century and will continue with seasonal favorites and multi-cultural selections: the Spanish folk song “Duermete”, with flautist Melissa Herceg; “Masters in This Hall”, featuring percussionists Aaron Barros and Sutton Freshour; the traditional carol “The First Noel’; the spiritual “Child of God”; and the contemporary “Various Themes on “Fa-La-La”.

The Girls Ensemble portion of the concert will begin with “From an Irish Cabin”, followed by Dan Forrest’s arrangement of the traditional English carol “On Christmas Night”, the Slovakian Lullaby “Dobru Noc”, featuring violinist Erica Henrichsen, “Ding, Dong Merrily on High”, another Dan Forrest arrangement “There Is Faint Music”, and ending with the Spanish carol “Riu, Riu Chiu”, with percussion by Jerica Henrichsen and Lucy Bradley.

The Boys Ensemble and the Fifth Street Boys will present a combination of songs: “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” and “Adeste Fideles” by Greg Gilpin; “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas”; “The Journey” by Joseph Martin; “A Christmas Message” featuring soloist Owen McCrady; “Let There Be Peace” and “Thirty Second Merry Christmas.”

In the final section, all the choirs will combine to sing “An English Carol Medley,” a medley of well-known carols, beginning with solos by Katie Henrichsen, Bryar Greene, and Zoe King and will end the program with “Peace, Peace” with the audience joining in the singing of “Silent Night”.

The STCC is an auditioned choir of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders from the Mid-Ohio Valley who meet for weekly rehearsals and music instruction by the staff: director Barbara Full, accompanist Marsha Parsons, and Smoot Artistic Director Felice Jorgeson. The STBE is a group of boys in grades seven and above and is directed by Janet Blessing, accompanist is Kim Vineyard; the STGE is a group of girls in grades seven and above and is directed by Catherine Martin, accompanist is Jane Irvine.
