Off the Hook: Famed children’s tale ‘Peter Pan’ takes stage Friday in Marietta
MARIETTA — A classic children’s story will be presented Friday, Saturday and Sunday weekend at the Mid-Ohio Valley Youth Players in Marietta.
“Peter Pan: Non-Flying Version!” runs 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 and are available at midohiovalleyplayers.com or at the box office two hours before each show.
“Peter Pan: Non-Flying Version!” is an adaptation by Jon Jory of J.M. Barrie’s story about the adventures in Neverland of Peter Pan, a young boy who refuses to grow up, and Wendy.
Unlike the original, the Jory version has a female Captain Hook and her gang of pirates.
Dorothy Evalena Clark plays the sassy Captain Hook.
“She has a big personality and she’s witty and conniving and an incredible character,” Clark said.
Her favorite part is being as loud and excited as she wants.
“I’ve loved working with these other amazing actors the last couple months,” Clark said. “It’s wonderfully choreographed and the chemistry between the cast makes for incredible acting and scenes.”
New to the Player’s stage is Grant Smith in the lead role of Peter Pan.
“(Peter) is energetic, off the walls and everything you could imagine,” he said.
“The fight scenes are my favorite part,” Smith said. “It’s realistic and fast paced and the energy of them is great.”
Brittany Ward will be in her final youth show as Wendy Darling.
“Wendy acts as a mother for Peter, Tinkerbell and all the Lost Boys. I’ve always loved playing the mother role and even at the end of the play I get a daughter for myself, Jane,” she said. “That’s kind of what the play is about for me, being a mom and how you act in that.”
Ward is excited for audiences to see the show.
“I am looking forward to just seeing my friends and family in the audience for my last show at MOVP for the youth players,” she said. “I’m excited to see everyone’s faces when they see their kids and friends on stage because when it’s all said and done this is for the people and the community and I’m excited to see how everyone reacts.”
The show is sponsored by The Original Pizza Place and supported by the Ohio Arts Council, which receives support from the State of Ohio and the National Endowment for the Arts. Directors are J.R. Wells and Jules Stephens.
