Mid-Ohio Valley community groups preparing free Thanksgiving dinners

PARKERSBURG — Several community groups and churches across the Mid-Ohio Valley plan to offer free Thanksgiving community meals in the upcoming week.

* Hope Mission, at 1300 Lynn St. in Parkersburg, will offer a carryout community meal Sunday from 2-3 p.m. The dinner offerings include turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green beans, pumpkin pie and a dinner roll.

Hope Mission said there is a limit of one meal per individual present at the event. For more information, call or text the Hope Mission at 740-336-9046.

* Norwood United Methodist Church, 23 Colegate Drive, Marietta, will provide a free Thanksgiving meal to the community on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28. Meals are available for pick-up or delivery only with a limit of six meals delivered to one address. Deliveries for the meals will begin at 10 a.m. and meal pickup will start at 11 a.m. for those going in person.

Starting Sunday through Wednesday, reservations for the dinner can be made by calling the church at 740-374-5606.

Norwood UMC is also seeking out volunteers to assist with food preparation and the delivery of meals on Thanksgiving. If interested in volunteering, contact Barb Handschumacher at 740-371-4204.

* Wayside United Methodist Church, 3001 Grand Central Ave., Vienna, will offer a free Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving Day from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Local area churches within the Vienna Ministerial Association sponsor the meal.

* St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 219 11th St., Parkersburg, will host a Thanksgiving clothing and house goods giveaway and a free breakfast beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

* The Salvation Army of Parkersburg will also offer a community meal on Thanksgiving Day with carryout and delivery meals, but no sit-down dinner.

Deliveries will start at 10 a.m. For the carryout option, those interested in receiving a meal can arrive at 534 Fifth St. in Parkersburg between 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The Salvation Army is also still seeking out volunteers to assist in the effort. Any volunteer can arrive at the building between 8:30-9 a.m. or call 304-485-4529 for more information.

* In Williamstown, American Legion General George Post 159 will be offering its annual Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day, with several options available.

Delivered and pick-up meals must be pre-ordered on Tuesday and Wednesday by calling 740-525-8802. Deliveries are available in the Williamstown/Waverly area and will be sent out from noon-1 p.m. Thanksgiving.

All Williamstown/Waverly community and Post 159 families can dine in at the post from 1-3 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Doors will open at 1 p.m. Pre-ordered meals will be available at 2 p.m.
