Creative Camp 2024: Wood County event offers wide slate of crafting classes

MINERAL WELLS -- Heritage skills, arts and crafts and educational classes will be offered in October during a one-day "Creative Camp" at the Wood County 4-H Campground on Butcher Bend Road.
The 54th Annual Creative Camp, scheduled for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 19, is a craft and educational workshop sponsored by the Cultural Arts Committee of the Wood County Community Educational Outreach Service Club.
The available classes include:
* Basket, Market Basket -- Sharon Flannagan -- Basket is approximately 12" x 17" and is made of reed on a 12" D-handle. Kit will include a completed bottom, material to finish basket, and a tie-on. Student needs to bring a bucket, clips, and scissors. $38.
* Baskets -- Dee Dee Adams -- Make a berry Basket that is 6" square and 6 tall using plain and dyed reed with a wrapped handle and an unusual rin. Bring cutters, clothes pins, measuring tape, screwdriver, pencil and small bucket. $20.
* Basic Crochet -- Tru Hill -- Learn how to read crochet patterns, crochet 2 basic stitches and create a square. Yarn and crochet hook supplied. $6.
* Button Pictures -- Regina Farsaci -- Using burlap as background and a variety of colored buttons you will make a beautiful shaped design that will then be framed. $10.
* Crochet #2 -- Tru Hill -- Learn to do a simple project. Instructions will be given on starting a cotton crocheted dishcloth which may be finished at home. Yarn and pattern provided. Crochet hook supplied in first class or bring your own. $6.
* Christmas Stocking -- Kay Hill -- Make a machine sewn Christmas stocking. Bring your own sewing machine, sewing notions, scissors and choice of print fabric (1 yd.) plus l yd. of plain color or muslin. Let us know if you need instructor to provide fabric. The cost will be passed to you. $7(if you bring your own fabric.)
* Decorative Painting/Tole Art -- Roseanne Taylor -- Learn the art of decorative painting by using a type of model paste design, plus pen, ink, oil or acrylics. Everything provided. $10.
* Essential Oils -- Michelle MeVaney -- Personal Care DIY Class. Reduce toxins for better health. Discover how to create your own products and take control of what you put on your skin. You will make deodorant, exfoliating scrub, mouthwash, nail growth treatment, nail nourishment, breath spritzer, and cold sore roller bottle. $30.
* Felted Wool Holiday Coasters -- Susan Pierce -- You will be making two 5" square coasters from 100% felted wool. The pattern and all supplies will be furnished. You will learn several decorative stitches while you applique this project. Please bring a pair of scissors. First (#1) class will make Fall Sunflower coasters. Second class (#2) will make Christmas Ornament coasters, two colors to choose from. Kits available. Please let us know two weeks prior, if you are interested in kits. $10. (per kit or class.)
* Floral Arrangements -- Mary Ash -- Using artificial flowers and ba of various sizes, you will learn the basics of floral arrangements, and take home a completed basket arrangement. $20.
* Genealogy #1 -- Jim Miracle -- This will be a beginning Genealogy Course. Students bring what information you have on yourself, your grandparents and your great grandparents. FREE
* Genealogy #2 -- Jim Miracle -- It will be a roundtable discussion and workshop for those from the earlier class and those who have been searching for a while. On how to break those brick walls in your pursuit of your ancestors identification. FREE
* Glass Mosaic on Window Pane -- Becky Kidder -- Participants will complete a window mosaic either following a pattern provided or tota using your own creative ideas. All supplies will be provided including window pane. Window panes may vary in shape and sizes: $25.
* Greeting Cards -- Judy Hogsett -- Make eight greeting cards of four different designs, (two cards from each design). $12.
* Knitting -- Brynn Riordan -- This class will teach students the basics of hand knitting, Students will learn to cast on, knit, purl, east off, and join their work to create a mug cozy, All supplies are provided, $5.
* Jewelry --Thresa Prunty -- In this class we will be making a beaded bracelet on elastic with matching earrings. I will have a prepacked set with all supplies included for one bracelet and one set of matching earrings. $10.
* Leather Working -- Mila Raymond -- Learn the art of leather working. You will make a bracelet and keychain to take home. $10.
* Mediterranean Diet -- Gwen Crum & Sara Dunn -- Join Extension Agent, Gwen Crum, and Sara Dunn, Health Educator, for a lesson on the health benefits of The Mediterranean Diet. We will make and sample a few healthy recipes including a lesson on how to make the perfect baklava. Free
* Painting on Canvas -- Betsy Newbanks -- Learn to paint a unique design on an 11"x14" (gnome) or 20"x20"' (witch's hat) canvas. $20.
* Plarn (Plastic Yarn) -- Jeanette McNeely -- Learn how to make plastic yarn from grocery bags. Plarn can be crocheted, knitted or woven into sheets, and ironed to make flat. Crochet needles and knitting needles are available if you do not have them. Please bring an iron. $5.
* Pottery Mugs -- Jan Wittman -- Participants will make a hand built mug out of stoneware clay and decorate by adding clay or carving or stampin into the clay. When finished student will choose the glaze color and instructor will glaze and fire the mug in the kiln for you. Process takes about 10 days for bisque fire then glaze fire in the kiln. Projects can be taken home at this point. $35.
* Pot Scrubbers -- Wilma Springston -- Bring size P crochet hook. MUST KNOW HOW TO CROCHET TO TAKE THIS CLASS. $4.
* Quilting #1 -- Brian McCoy -- Beginning quilting techniques that can be used to make simple projects. Bring your own sewing machine, sewing notions, scissors, rulers and choice of print fabric. Dig into your stash and bring whatever fabric you would like to work with. Please arrive a little early to set up your work station. $15.
* Quilting #2 -- Brian McCoy -- Intermediate level of quilting instruction that can be used to make choices of projects to be presented. Bring your own sewing machine, sewing notions, scissors, rulers and choice of print fabric Dig into your stash and bring whatever fabric you would like to work with. Please arrive a little early to set up your work station. $20. (This class will run 12:30-4:30 p.m.)
* Teddy Bear Christmas Ornaments -- Susan Williamson -- Using pom-poms you will learn to make cute little tree ornaments. Take home two ornaments per person. Bring a glue gun and glue sticks. $10.
* Wood Flower Arrangement -- Kari Brown -- Participants will use plain white, handmade Sola Wood flowers to dye and assemble a floral arrangement in whatever color they desire. The flowers are also beautiful left the natural white color. Participants will assemble the arrangements in one of an assortment of 6-inch decorative ceramic bowls. All supplies, dye, glue, and tools provided. $20.
* Wreaths -- Linda Mack -- Make a seasonal wreath using pre-printed signs and coordinating ribbon. Learn new techniques for cutting bows, and working with plastic mesh. $30.
* Working with Tools -- Joe Vaughan -- Learn the basics of working small hand tools and small power tools, along with all safety precautions. Participants will take home gloves, safety goggles and earplugs, and of useful information. $7.
* Working with Small Engines -- Joe Vaughan -- Learn about working with small engines, how to change a spark plug, and precautions. Participants will take home gloves, safety goggle plugs, and lots of useful information. $7.
Registration for Creative Camp is $2 a person which benefits the 4-H Camp Trustees. Lunch is $7.
Payment for each class is made directly to the instructor at time of class.
If people register for a class, they are expected to attend or purchase the kit the instructor has prepared, officials said.
Reservations must be made ahead of time in order for the instructor to prepare the right amount of supplies.
Cancellations only accepted until Oct. 7.
