NEWPORT — Newport Methodist Church on Greene Street will celebrate its 225th birthday, its Quasquibicentennial, as a congregation and the birth of Methodism in the Newport Settlement on Sept. 29, 2024.
During the 1999 Bicentennial Celebration, the congregation buried a time capsule to be opened in 25 years.
A special Morning Worship Service will start at 10 a.m. Sept. 29. The guest speaker will be the Rev. Steven Smith of Barnesville, Ohio, who was the pastor during the 1999 celebration. The service will be followed by a luncheon provided by the Helping Hands Women’s Group. After lunch, the congregation will be digging up the capsule and dispersing the contents.

Newport Township was organized in 1798 and included the eastern third of Washington County. The first Methodist Missionary to the township was from Williamstown, Va. The Rev. Robert Manley arrived in Marietta on June 20, 1799, and visited every settlement in the county that summer, a number of classes were started and a circuit was organized.

A Methodist Society was organized in the Newport Settlement in the summer of 1799. It met in the cabins of the settlers and the Woodside School located at the intersection of County Roads 25 and 26. The congregation gad two other houses of worship. A frame building built at the foot of Turkey Knob in 1825 and the present brick building built in 1870 on Greene Street.
