Bike with a Cop event offers community outreach

PARKERSBURG -- The monthly Bike with a Cop, a community outreach program of the Parkersburg Police Department, was held Saturday at Point Park.
Bike with Cops pairs with other community programs such as National Night Out and Shop With a Cop to create positive relationships and impressions of the police.
"I think it's awesome we actually have some good interaction in a positive way, where, unfortunately, it's not always positive when someone calls the police," Lt. Mike Eichhorn said. "Normally there's trouble; someone or something needs help, so this is kind of a positive aspect of it."
According to Eichhorn, this is the first year of the event and it has met once a month throughout the summer, skipping once due to rain. During the event, the department distributed water, snacks, T-shirts with the Bike with a Cop logo on it and new helmets for those who either did not have any or did not have one that properly fit.
Layla, Saige and Wade Irick attended the event for the first time. Saige said she was excited to ride her bike and even talked about racing with her siblings. Wade also said he was excited because he wants to be a police officer when he grows up.
