PARKERSBURG -- The National Day of Prayer on the first Thursday of May will be held May 2 at several locations throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley.
The hour-long event is led by pastors and government leaders. President Harry S. Truman made the National Day of Prayer an annual observance in 1952.
Washington County will hold its observance on the lawn of the armory lawn at noon May 2. Pastor Rodney Lord will spearhead the event and will be joined by other community leaders. Chris Long of the Ohio Christian Alliance will be the featured speaker. Local musician Taj Rohr will sing.
Parkersburg will hold its annual event at noon at Bicentennial Park on Market Street where Mayor Tom Joyce is among several speakers who will join Tim Baer, the event organizer.
Mayor Randy Rapp will lead the observance in Vienna at the City Building at 8:30 a.m. May 2 around the flagpole at City Hall.
The event in Williamstown will take place at noon at the City Building. Pastor Elizabeth Campbell-Maleke is the leader.
In McConnelsville, residents will meet at noon at the courthouse. Pastor Steve Smith is the organizer.
The theme for this year's National Day of Prayer is "Lift up the Word, Light up the World" from 2 Samuel 22:29-31. Participants are encouraged to pray for family, church, business and workplace, education, military, government and the arts, media and entertainment. The public is welcome at all of these events and encouraged to join any of the prayer times.
