First Presbyterian Church of Williamstown plans Holy Humor Sunday

By Staff Reports 2 min read

WILLIAMSTOWN -- As the saying goes, if you want to make God laugh, make plans! However, we also know that life with God is not meant to be only somber and serious, and so God is not the only one laughing, but also those striving to follow where God leads ought to know a thing or two about laughter too.

First Presbyterian Church of Williamstown, 314 W. Fifth St., is celebrating this in a major way Sunday, when they celebrate Holy Humor Sunday with activities taking place at the church building both in the morning and the evening.

No, we didn't make this up. Many American churches are "resurrecting" an old Easter custom started by early Greek Christians also known as Bright Sunday or Laughter Sunday - meaning that during the Sunday immediately following Easter, the worship service takes on a little extra silliness, joy and laughter, as people celebrate how Jesus got the last laugh on evil by rising from the dead!

First Presbyterian Church in Williamstown is celebrating this during the 11 a.m. worship service Sunday in a variety of ways.

The pianist will offer her annual Holy Humor Prelude which includes snippets of 25 songs. There is a special prize for the person who can correctly identify the most songs. The choir will sing in costume and instead of just sharing Joys and Concerns, the bulletin reads Joys, Jokes and Concerns. On Holy Humor Sunday, you never know what might happen.

Sunday evening will feature a Music & Comedy night, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and music by the Waverly Run Bluegrass & Gospel starting at 6:30. Refreshments including popcorn and movie theater-style candy will be available.

At 7 p.m., nationally touring comedian Auggie Cook will perform. He has appeared on ABC and A&E and worked with many well-known comedians including Howie Mandel and Drew Carey. His quick wit, clean jokes, easy style and hilarious songs have been making audiences laugh for years.

A reception will follow the show. For admission, everyone is asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Bee Bag Food Program that serves families at Williamstown Elementary School or make a monetary donation for the food program.
