PARKERSBURG -- The Arc of the Mid Ohio Valley's four-week Inclusive Summer Day Program 2024 will begin June 10 at the South Parkersburg Baptist Church, 1655 Blizzard Drive, Parkersburg.
The program encourages youth to explore their community and provides social and recreation activities for youth and teens in sixth-12th grades in the Mid-Ohio Valley who utilize the special education system with an emphasis on community inclusion.
"We are so glad we can offer a camp where kids with intellectual and developmental differences can have a fun summer just like everyone else," said Michelle Curtis, Executive Director.
The program provides more fun and excitement than ever by offering in-person inclusive recreational programs as well as a few outings they might not otherwise get to participate in.
"We have what we believe is an exciting schedule of activities," added Curtis. "We will also be going to 4-H camp a few days again this year which the kids loved and was a great inclusive opportunity."
Trips and activities include: The Wilds, Art with Amee (Shah), a tour with SW Resources, finance management with Consumer Credit Counseling, Internet Safety, a trip to The Boys and Girls Club, swimming, and pickleball.
The Annual Youth Advocacy Day is slated for July 3. Students will explore and learn how to speak up for themselves and others. Role play and hands-on experience will help students learn to advocate for themselves. Participants will also develop a circle of support and how to use advocacy skills while in school and throughout the rest of their lives to ensure their voices are heard.
As a result of this project, children with developmental disabilities will get to participate in age-appropriate activities of their choice, and will have increased opportunities to form positive relationships with people who have and do not have disabilities. The Arc of the Mid Ohio Valley recognizes the importance of health and all safety measures regarding COVID-19 will be followed.
The Summer Program provides opportunities for inclusion in a structured, caring, and supportive environment emphasizing: developing friendships, having fun with other youth and teens, daily living skills, peer interaction, socialization skills, and community interaction.
Camp fee is $150 per week to pay for staff and supplies however stipends are available to support students who would otherwise not be able to attend. Funding for the camp is provided by the Henry Logan Foundation and The United Way Alliance of the Mid Ohio Valley.
