Wirt archers score another bullseye in tournament play

ELIZABETH -- An archer from Wirt County placed first at the 14th annual Elkview Middle School archery tournament on Friday and Saturday in Charleston..

Clayton Mills, a junior at Wirt County High School, won first place in the male high school division and first in individual standings with a score of 294 out of 300 possible points, making him the overall tournament winner. Mills is the son of Sam and Tracy Mills and grandson of Chuck and Marilyn Mills and Mike Rogers and Janet Rogers.

Mills achieved two perfect 50-point rounds at 10 meters and two perfect 50-point rounds at 15 meters, including 25 bullseyes.

The first place was the second for Mills in a week. On Feb. 10, he placed first at the Ravenswood Archery Tournament.

The Wirt County High School archery team participated in the tournament, held at the Charleston Civic Center, that was the largest of the season with 1,278 registered archers.

Tournament scores are calculated based on individual, team and male and female divisions for elementary, middle and high schools. Each archer shoots three rounds of five arrows at a distance of 10 meters and three rounds of five arrows at 15 meters for a total of 300 points, 50 points per round.

In addition to Mills, the top five high school scores for the Wirt County High School Archery team included Connor McKown (253), Brooke Cross (249), Megan Cutlip (249) and Trevor Jones (240). The top five scores for the Wirt County Middle School team were Isabella Speece (259), Jasmine Williams (241), Sam Williams (240), Hunter McCray (238) and Tucker Corbitt (228).

The Wirt County archery team is preparing for the first East Bank Middle School Archery Tournament scheduled Saturday.
