MARIETTA -- Five students from the area will be among eight in the annual Senior Art and Design Capstone Exhibition that opens Jan. 19 at Marietta College.
* Isabelle Bradley of Parkersburg, who is majoring in graphic design. A graduate of Parkersburg South High School, her project is a typographic-based designs of films that hold a nostalgic element for the designer. Her designs merge contemporary elements with traditional ones, reviving movies by imbuing them with dynamic typographic elements.
* Evan Lauer of Newport, majoring in Graphic Design. The Frontier High School graduate will present "Ethics and Aesthetics: The Inclusive Designer's Handbook" that was written and crafted to demystify the complexities of inclusive design and transform a daunting commitment into a doable practice. In addition to offering actionable insights to immediately improve inclusion, the book also delves into the rationale behind these changes and identifies the diverse range of individuals they impact to underscore the importance of inclusive design.
* Baili Matheny of Little Hocking, a major in graphic design and a graduate of Warren High School. Matheny's capstone project is tapestry designs featuring visual elements from the Indian, Greek, Cherokee and Chinese cultures. The purpose of showing different cultures' symbols, elements, and motifs is to bring diversity and culture that is not prevalent in southeast Ohio. She wants to show something that will get others interested in learning about other cultures and diversity so they can gain new experiences and growth.
* Olivia Martin of Vincent, another graphic design major and a home school. Martin's capstone project, "Marietta Now and Past," features photographic collages that visualize the connections of the architectural history of Marietta using historical images taken by a famous local photographer, Harry Philip Fischer, and combined with the present-day images captured by the student.
* Dawson Van Dine of Marietta, majoring in graphic design, graduated from Marietta High School. His capstone project is vinyl music album designs with posters that are unique and frameable pieces of artwork that are meant to compliment the art found in and on the album sleeve.
Presented by the Art Department, the show will be held 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday from Jan. 19-March 1 in the Hermann Fine Arts Center's Atrium Gallery. Other students in the show are Rachel Guilliams, Madison Howard and Logan Osborne.
