St. Paul’s breakfast ministry helps those in need

By Staff Reports 2 min read

PARKERSBURG -- While the rest of the world sleeps, volunteers at St. Paul's United Methodist Church are making sure there is a hot breakfast available for people in need.

On the fourth Saturday of the month, Missy Plumly and her team of helpers rise early to warm the fellowship hall and start preparing hot meals and beverages for anyone wanting or needing a filling meal.

"My family and some very special folks from St. Paul's donate hours each month to making this meal happen," Plumly, the founder of the food ministry, said. "No one should have to go without a good breakfast because of financial or other reasons."

Visitors to the monthly meal program have included members of the church and residents from a local senior citizen center.

"When we open our doors, we open them to everyone," Plumly said. "This meal is for young and old alike. You don't have to be a church member to attend. We just want to help others."

St. Paul's has hosted similar meals in the past, but Plumly was the brainchild of this endeavor.

"I was working in the church breadline and saw a need," Plumly said. "I felt a strong desire to offer a nice, comfortable environment for people to sit down and enjoy a meal in."

The fellowship hall at St. Paul's is located at 11th and Market Streets across from Simmons Station Post Office.

"This is a nice, central location for people on foot or bike," Plumly said. "We also have a parking lot on the side of the church for parking."

Monthly breakfasts start at 9 a.m. and meals are served until 11 a.m. This month the meal is on Dec. 23.

Funding for the monthly breakfast program comes from members of St. Paul's and with a recent grant from West Virginia Central Credit Union.

"We are so blessed to have so many people who care about helping others," Plumly said. "With the help of the church and our new grant, we should be able to provide meals for several months for the community."

Plumly said she and volunteers are willing to expand the program as the number of visitors grows.
