Mid-Ohio Youth Players to present ‘A Christmas Carol’

MARIETTA -- "A Christmas Carol" based on the Charles Dickens classic will be presented Friday, Saturday and Sunday by the Mid-Ohio Valley Youth Players.
The play is the story of the miserly Ebeneezer Scrooge, an old man who values money and profit over anything and everyone. After being visited by the ghost of Jacob Marley, his long-deceased business partner, Scrooge learns the meaning of Christmas with help from the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.
Chloe Patterson plays Scrooge, the show's main character.
"Scrooge is a grouchy old man and very mean," Patterson said. "Slowly he becomes a nicer person and at the end of the show he's an energetic man who loves Christmas and everyone around him."
Patterson does not relate to the grouchy Scrooge in the beginning of the show.
"When I told my coworkers I was playing Scrooge they said that must be really hard for me because I'm a bubbly person," Patterson said. "I really love Christmas; it's one of my favorite holidays."
Enjoying the part of the Ghost of Christmas Present, Esther Brown is in her first Mid-Ohio Valley Players show. She describes the character as joyful and enthusiastic.
"With Scrooge, my character doesn't know exactly how to feel about him because he's very oblivious and he's not a good person," Brown said. "It's hard to be patient with him."
Rachel McClung takes on the role of Fred, Scrooge''s nephew who tries to get his uncle to come to Christmas dinner.
"Fred is the life of the party and very happy. He sees the best in everyone and wants the best for everyone," McClung said.
McClung said everyone who sees the show will enjoy it.
"It's a classic, fun story and it's going to be an amazing show," she said.
Susan Boyer, the show's playwright and co-director, several years ago adapted the script from the Dickens novel.
"There were lots of versions of 'A Christmas Carol' out and about and I read them all and didn't like them, so I decided to write my own," Boyer said.
Her version has been performed many times over the years by the Youth Players. This year marks the last time she will take on a directing role as Boyer has been with the youth group since 1992.
J.R. Wells is the co-director and the assistant director is Jules Stephens
"Everyone should come and enjoy the show and get in the Christmas spirit," Boyer said.
"A Christmas Carol" will be presented 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Players Theater, 229 Putnam St.
Tickets are $10 each and are available in advance at midohiovalleyplayers.com or at the box office beginning 90 minutes before every show. A 50/50 raffle will be held each night to raise money for the Scholarship Fund.
