MARIETTA -- Auditions for "Carrie: The Musical," based on the Stephen King thriller, will be held 6-9 p.m. Sunday and Monday, Jan. 28 and 29, in the upstairs of the annex next door to the Mid-Ohio Valley Players Theatre at 227 Putnam St., Marietta.
"Carrie" is about a teenage outcast who longs to fit in. At school, she's bullied by the popular crowd and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she's dominated by her loving but cruelly controlling mother. What none of them know is that Carrie's just discovered she's got a special power, and if pushed too far, she's not afraid to use it.
The musical is based on the King novel, "Carrie," which was turned into a 1976 horror film of the same name.
The auditions will include singing, dancing and acting. Information about audition songs for specific characters is available at midohiovalleyplayers.com
Show dates are May 3, 4, 10, 11 and 12
Although Carrie, Sue, Chris, Tommy and Billy are high school characters, auditions will be only for actors 18 and older at the time of auditions. Sixteen- and 17-year olds will be accepted for other high school characters, but with parent or guardian permission required before being considered for the roles.
No one under 16 will be permitted to audition.
Characters are:
* Carrie White: A shy outcast often bullied by her classmates. Carrie discovers she has telekinetic powers.
* Margaret White: Carrie's overprotective and abusive mother. Margaret is very religious. Although she loves Carrie and wants to protect her from the world, especially from the school, her fanaticism often drives her to home school or abuse her daughter.
* Sue Snell: Initially teases Carrie like the other girls, but later feels remorse. In an attempt for redemption, she asks her boyfriend, Tommy Ross, to take Carrie to the prom instead of her.
* Tommy Ross: At first, Tommy takes no interest in Carrie, but takes her to the prom on the request of his girlfriend, Sue. Tommy is apprehensive, but soon finds himself wanting to become friends with her.
* Chris Hargensen: Chris hates Carrie, bullying her at every opportunity. After Chris is banned from the prom as punishment for bullying Carrie, she vows revenge.
* Billy Nolan: The "not-so-smart" boyfriend of Chris. He plans to take Chris to prom until Chris is forbidden from attending the event.
* Miss Gardner: A teacher and Carrie's fairy godmother. She soon realizes Carrie is completely oblivious to her changes in her body. She helps Carrie develop self-esteem, giving her the courage to accept Tommy's invitation to prom.
* Mr. Stephens/Reverend Bliss: A well-intentioned English teacher and guidance counselor struggles to help his students realize their potential. Also doubles as a reverend.
* Freida: Sue's brainy pal. She's easy-going and a tireless extracurricular committee volunteer.
* Norma: Gossipy and a shameless suck-up to authority, Norma is second-in-command to Chris.
* Helen: Giggly and easily shocked, her immaturity and need to belong make her the perfect example of herd mentality.
* George: Tommy's jock wingman since childhood. George idolizes Tommy, perhaps too much.
* Stokes: A nerd, he's happy to be included as one of Tommy's posse.
* Freddy: The wisecracking class clown and official yearbook photographer.
* Ensemble: Various vocal types, playing high school students
