PARKERSBURG -- An annual program teaching kids about fractions will be held Tuesday at Fairplains Elementary School in Parkersburg.
The Fractions Cooking Show will include third-grade students and their parents starting at 9 a.m., Principal Julie Gibson said.
The 9 a.m. presentation will be for parents who will be shown how to teach fractions to their children, Gibson said. The presentation to the adults will be by Title 1 teacher Jody Carder-Hamilton, Gibson said.
Students will take part in the program at 9:30 a.m. when they and their parents will make chocolate chip cookies, the ingredients of which, such as flour, sugar and chips, will be based on fractions, Gibson said.
Fractions are difficult to learn for someone of a young age, she said.
"It's a new concept for them to think about something smaller than one," Gibson said.
The Fractions Cooking Show started eight years ago and has been held each year. About 35 students will participate this year, Gibson said.
"Our third graders do it every year," she said.
The mixture of the ingredients will be placed into a Mason jar for the children to take home and bake, Gibson said.
