MARIETTA -- Washington State Community College held its inaugural Pumpkin Chuckin' event Saturday as a fun way to dispose of the community's pumpkins.
The event included several food trucks, a kids zone full of activities, a table where folks could decorate their pumpkins before blast off and live music from Phase 2. There were also many tables dedicated to the clubs the college offers, all leading up to the main event in which attendees' carved pumpkins were disposed of via a catapult or trebuchet built by college personnel.
Once the pumpkins were registered and weighed for catapulting, event organizer Ben Harris welcomed everyone to the event and started the main attraction.
"Thank you all for coming," said Harris. "Are you ready?"
And with that, Harris flung the first pumpkin and the crowd cheered and applauded as it smashed hard onto the ground.
"I am super pleased with the turnout today," Harris said. "I would love to involve the high schools in the event next year, and we're talking about having people make their own catapults and having new weigh-ins for different size pumpkins."
