Mid-Ohio Valley Fellowship Home kicks off giving campaign

PARKERSBURG -- A local sober-living organization is seeking the community's support in providing activities and helping its residents give back as well.
The Mid-Ohio Valley Fellowship Home recently launched its giving campaign with a goal of raising $5,000 to expand resources available to residents as they work their way through the 12 steps of Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous.
The money "will provide financial means for our residents to assist other vulnerable populations," said Brandy Blatt, executive director of the Fellowship Home.
This could be in the form of purchasing food for the residents to serve at the Salvation Army or Latrobe Street Mission, she said.
"It gives our residents an opportunity to learn what it's like to really be a community member," Blatt said.
As people recover from addiction, they have a sense of gratitude, she said. They want to give back, and serving in these places not only allows that but can demonstrate to others in need the possibility of a sober life.
The home has worked to create partnerships and collaborate with area businesses and organizations, a release announcing the campaign said. Funds raised can help expand those efforts to subsidize activities with organizations that might not be able to donate 100% of their time or resources.
"We are looking for new ways to bring more collaborative efforts to the Fellowship Home," said Hannah West, board president.
They recently reestablished a partnership with Project Yoga, run by Full Circle Yoga in Vienna, under which teachers volunteer their time to provide two yoga classes a week to residents, the release said.
People can contribute through their time and talents rather than financially. The Fellowship Home welcomes people willing to share their special skills with residents, Blatt said.
"If you're good at fishing, meet a couple guys who would love to go fishing," she said.
The Mid-Ohio Valley Fellowship Home offers five sober-living homes in the area serving West Virginia and Ohio residents struggling with addiction, as well as their families. The organization has assisted more than 5,500 people over the last 50 years.
