CHARLESTON -- Six artists from the region are participating in the 2023 West Virginia Juried Exhibition Artists opening at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Culture Center in Charleston.
Sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, the 23rd biennial West Virginia Juried Exhibition will feature 66 West Virginia artists exhibiting 89 paintings, drawings, mixed media, crafts, photography, digital art, sculpture and prints. Thirty counties are represented in the show.
Participating local artists are:
* Beth Crowder, West Union, painting.
* Debbie Sisson, Ripley, painting.
* Karen Chamblin, Belmont, painting.
* Mike Danko, Parkersburg, crafts.
* Christine Rhodes, Parkersburg, painting.
* Damon Rhodes, Parkersburg, photography.
The opening reception and awards ceremony is free and open to the public. The exhibit will remain on display at the Culture Center until Feb. 10.
"The West Virginia Juried Exhibition continues its tradition of presenting the best of our state's well-known and emerging artists," Curator Randall Reid-Smith of the Department of Arts, Culture and History said. "This exhibition is supported by one of the nation's largest endowments for juried exhibitions, allowing the department to collect contemporary art for the State Museum collection."
Exhibition award winners will be announced at the opening reception.
Governor's Award winners will receive $5,000 for their work and Award of Excellence winners will receive $2,000, which are purchase awards and the art will become part of the West Virginia State Museum's permanent contemporary art collection.
Merit Awards of $500 each also will be presented.
