PARKERSBURG — Blennerhassett Elementary School is drumming up some enthusiasm this week with a special physical education program for students.

School nurse Sabrina Anderson and physical education teacher Trish Sanders teamed up to bring the POUND: Rockout Workout class to the school. POUND is a cardio exercise program using specially weighted drumsticks called Ripstix. Rachel Burnham, with Rockstar Wellness in Marietta, led students in Generation POUND, a modified program designed for children ages 6-12. Burnham said the kids’ workout emphasizes shorter duration exercises combined with games and fun activities.

“They are getting a workout but also playing,” Burnham said.

Students throughout the school had the opportunity Monday and Tuesday to participate in the program. Anderson and Sanders participate in an adults’ POUND class weekly and felt it would be a unique and fun opportunity for students.

“We are excited to be able to bring it to our students as exercise is a vital part of overall wellness,” Anderson said.

Burnham said she has led classes at all of the Fort Frye Local School District elementary schools in Ohio but Blennerhassett Elementary is the first school in Wood County to participate in the Generation POUND program.
