PARKERSBURG -- The Buckskin Council Kootaga Trails Camporee 2023 will be Oct. 13-15.
Cub Scouts, their families/guardians and Scouts BSA troops are invited to the weekend at Camp Kootaga. This event is open to all registered Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, Webelos and Scouts.
The goal is to provide a fun and safe weekend where everyone can enjoy Camp Kootaga through a fun-filled day of events and two nights of camping with their fellow Scouts. This is a family camping event. The entire event is being organized and conducted by all the members of Troop 203, Shaun Harris (Scoutmaster), Butch Hawkins (Assistant Scoutmaster).
Scouts BSA troops should expect to partake in challenge-based events and learn outdoor skills. The Fall Camporee is an excellent opportunity for units to demonstrate proficiency in Scout skills and teamwork, organizers said.
The Kootaga Trails Game was developed to mimic the journey of settlers on the Oregon Trail. There is still a free version you can play online at visitoregon.com. The SPL is the wagon leader. They will lead their patrol of settlers from Independence, Missouri, to the Willamette Valley in Oregon while traveling along the Oregon Trail. Coins will be used at the General Store (Sparky's Park) and will be awarded at stations on the trail depending on how a patrol does. The patrol with the most coins at the end of the game, wins.
Webelos are encouraged to participate in the Kootaga Trails event.
Team up with partnering Scouts BSA troop and see camp activities in action. The Webelos Scouts will practice working together as a Patrol independently under Scout youth leadership. This is a great opportunity for Troops to show Webelos Scouts and their parents why they should join Scouts BSA.
Cub Scouts can come out for a free afternoon of fun. If a pack wants to camp, the fee is $20 per person, with Saturday lunch and dinner provided. If coming just for the day, be sure to bring lunch, a filled water bottle, and other Cub Scout Essentials.
While the older scouts are on the trail playing the Kootaga Trails Game, Cubs will have an opportunity to visit various stations around camp. An information sheet can be picked up upon check-in, with the location and times that each station is open. Play Pioneer era games such as Checkers, Jacks, Hopscotch, Cat's cradle, Tic-tac-toe, Jump Rope, Kick the Can, Tug of War, Sack races, 3-legged races, Wheelbarrow Races Hands on Activities and Live Demonstrations. Explore a pioneer encampment. Explore camp while participating in a Scavenger Hunt.
