Antique boats coming to Marietta

By Jess Mancini 2 min read

MARIETTA -- Members of the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society will be in Marietta the weekend of Sept. 29.

About 10 antique boats will dock at the Marietta Harbor where people can see them and speak to the owners, Tom Danford of Marietta, a member of the society and classic boater, said.

"They all will be antiques. They all will be wooden," Danford said.

Boats will come from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky and maybe from other places, too, he said.

The group will depart McConnelsville on the morning of Sept. 29 and will arrive around 5 p.m. in Marietta, he said.

The trip on the Muskingum River to Marietta is a main attraction for the chapter, Danford said.

The system of 10 locks and dams date from 1837 from Zanesville to Marietta and has been designated the Muskingum River Parkway State Park and is the only remaining system of hand-operated locks in the country. The locks are on the National Register of Historic Places.

"That's one of the attractions of this group," Danford said.

The boats will be docked at the Marietta Harbor on the Muskingum River, Danford said. Marietta Harbor is on Butler Street off Front Street.

On Saturday morning, the boats will leave Marietta Harbor for the Little Kanawha River where the group will go to the Old Corral docks, he said. The group will eat lunch at the Old Corral docks, Danford said.

"We'll check that out," he said.

The boats will return to the Marietta Harbor and depart town Sunday morning, Danford said. Most will trailer their boats at the dock upriver on the Muskingum, although one boater may return to Cincinnati by river, he said.
