Blennerhassett FFA members receive awards

RIPLEY -- Blennerhassett FFA members from Wood County attended the 95th annual West Virginia State FFA Convention July 5-8 in Ripley.
Blennerhassett chapter Vice President Michelle Sampson placed second in the Employment Skills Leadership Development Event. The competition requires students to create a cover letter and resume, complete a written application and perform a face-to-face interview for an agricultural job.
Sampson and Emily Kent were recognized as recipients of the State FFA Degree, the highest honor West Virginia FFA can bestow. The recognition is earned through exemplary leadership in the FFA, community service and a supervised hands-on agricultural experience outside of school.
Kent also was recognized as the West Virginia Star in Community Service. The award recognizes an FFA member who exemplifies the community service mission of the FFA. Along with her involvement in other service projects, Kent has donated more than 800 hours of her time to the Toys for Tots program in Wood County.
The Blennerhassett FFA chapter operates from the Wood County Technical Center and has members from Parkersburg South High School, Parkersburg High School and Williamstown Middle/High School.
The four-day conference provided opportunities to meet and learn from the state FFA Officer Team, National FFA Officer Karstyn Cantrell from Oklahoma and state Commissioner of Agriculture, Kent Leonhardt.
Members competed in events, attended sessions, participated in leadership workshops and performed community service during the week.
