Parkersburg to begin asphalt rejuvenation treatments

PARKERSBURG -- A contractor is scheduled to begin work this week extending the life of recently paved Parkersburg streets.
Pavement Technology will start on the $149,848 asphalt rejuvenation contract today in the city's north end.
"This puts a flexibility back into the pavement, or, as they say, the marshmallow back into the Rice Krispie (treat)," City Engineer Adam Stout said.
It's the fourth year the city has included asphalt rejuvenation in its paving efforts. The treatment is recommended for asphalt three years or less old.
In the first year of the process, the city had the treatment applied to roads paved between 2017 and 2020, Mayor Tom Joyce said. Since then, it's been applied to streets the year after they're paved.
"It usually extends … five to 10 years on average, as far as pavement life," Stout said.
This year's paving contract, which covered more than seven miles of city streets, wrapped up last week. All of those roads will be on next year's rejuvenation schedule, Stout said.
"These efforts have already shown to be beneficial with prolonging the pavement we invest in annually," Joyce said. "I applaud City Engineer Adam Stout for his identification and research related to this product and technique, and I ask for patience as this effort progresses over the coming weeks."
The project is planned to take four days, although rain can delay it, Stout said.
