PARKERSBURG -- Professional and amateur artists will have their works on display at the Parkersburg Art Center in an exhibit opening on Friday and running through Aug.
The show kicks off with an opening reception and awards Ceremony from 5-7 p.m. Friday.
"We have invited artists living within 100 miles of Parkersburg, to enter up to five pieces of their artwork in the 2023 Regional Exhibit with the theme 'ROY G BIV: Communicate In Color,'" said Abby Hayhurst, artistic director for the Parkersburg Art Center. "All I can say is WOW! The artists really went to work and came up with so many ideas to fit this year's theme.
"We definitely want to thank our longtime sponsors, United Bank and WVU Medicine, for making it possible to show so many pieces of artwork by professionals and amateurs in this Regional Exhibit. Artwork will be spread throughout the gallery and our building. The response by area artists was wonderful and we have some very worthy prize winners," Hayhurst said.
Cash prizes will be awarded at the opening reception in four categories: 2D, 3D, Photo/Digital and Theme. There are also several special prizes along with the Best in Show award and People's Choice award (which will be awarded in August).
The PAC Regional Exhibit is an open exhibit which means that everything that is submitted is hung. In the summer of 2024 the art center will host "The River," which is a regional juried show presented every two years.
"We were pleased to bring in Allison Helm to judge this show. Alison Helm received her MFA from Syracuse University and her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art. Her work has been exhibited extensively at galleries, museums, and sculpture parks throughout the United States, Japan, Taiwan, and Mexico including the Cultural Center in Charleston, the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., the Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh, Pa., and the Huntington Museum. She currently teaches sculpture at WVU," said Hayhurst.
The opening reception is free for exhibitors plus one guest, Parkersburg Art Center members and for children ages 12 and younger. Otherwise, general admission for the evening reception is $10.
"ROY G BIV: Communicating in Color" will be open for viewing Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. through Aug. 18. Daily admission to the Art Center is free for all of 2023 thanks to the Admissions Sponsorship of WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center.
The Parkersburg Art Center is located at the corner of Eighth and Market streets in downtown Parkersburg with plenty of off-street parking in the lot adjacent to the Parkersburg Catholic Elementary School playground.
