Wood County students go full S.T.E.A.M. ahead with experiments

VIENNA -- Jackson Middle School's Makers Club hosted its first Bloom Academy on Saturday at Jackson Middle School.
Fifth graders from surrounding feeder schools -- Emerson, Neale, Vienna, and Greenmont Elementary -- were invited to participate with teammates in creative S.T.E.A.M Challenges.
Challenges included building sails to propel a large rubber duck for the Ducky Derby, creating paper airplanes that could fly a Mochi squish toy, and working with limited materials to build a bridge that would withstand a 7-inch gap and hold the most weight. The challenges were designed by the Makers Club with the help of faculty advisors Cherish George and Ronnie Talbott.
The day was filled with creative thinking, problem solving, and on-the-fly engineering.
Jackson Middle School's website said The Makers Club would like to thank all participants, Jackson Middle School faculty, and parent volunteers who helped to make the first Bloom Academy a success.
"We would also like to thank Candace Lewis, Wood County's Math and Science Coordinator, for showing up to support our students and future Generals," the website said. "Last but not least, we would like to thank the Board of Education for continuing to champion S.T.E.A.M. in our county!"
