Parkersburg High School Foundation awards 2023 teacher grants

PARKERSBURG -- The Parkersburg High School Foundation announced the recipients of the 2023 Teacher Grants.

These grants are designed to support teachers in enhancing classroom instruction and providing innovative learning opportunities for their students.

A total of $22,624.12 was awarded to 12 teachers across various departments at PHS. The grants will be used for projects such as an adaptive couch for autism students, a thermal drone for drone and robotics classes, and a presentation by the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company for English students. "We are thrilled to be able to support our teachers in their efforts to provide the best possible education for our students," said Jeff Thomas, President of the PHS Foundation. "These grants will help our teachers bring new and exciting learning opportunities to our classrooms."

The foundation was established in 1988 to support the educational and extracurricular programs at PHS. The Teacher Grants program is one of several initiatives the foundation sponsors annually.

List of teachers and what they intend to use their portion of the $22,624.12 awarded to them on:

* Christine Walker will use funds to purchase of an adaptive couch for the sensory area for autism students.

* Steve Reiner will use the funds to purchase a thermal drone for the drone and robotics classes.

* Jama Davis will use the funds for yoga materials to be used by students in an autistic class.

* Elsie Horton will use the funds to bring a presentation by the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company for students in English 11 to PHS.

* Kate Blaker will use the funds to purchase curriculum and middle school math activities bundle to teach/reteach students.

* Abby Casto will use the funds to purchase 30 TI-84 CE Plus graphing calculators, three charging stations, and a storage caddy.

* Teffany Armel will use the funds to purchase 35 copies of "Romeo and Juliet" for students in English 9.

* Miranda Wilson accepted the funds on behalf of the art department. The funds will be used to purchase display equipment for artwork.

* Jay Lindamood will use the funds to purchase kites to be used to determine wind force by students in ninth grade science.

* Daniel Jonas will use the allotment to aid in the purchase of pairs of binoculars for the Natural History course and locking tubs to transport reptiles to elementary feeder schools.

* Rene' Fowler will use the funds to purchase digital curriculum for the inclusion geometry class.

* Abby Taylor and Susan Lynch will use the funds to purchase materials for a Mother's Day sow and grow program.
