Club News: Daughters of the American Revolution meets

PARKERSBURG — The James Wood Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met Feb. 4 at Stout Memorial United Methodist Church.

Members present included Regent Jane Richards, Stephanie Phelps, Julia Hoffman, Louise Wince, Chaplain Dina Braniff, Katie Brown, Mary Smith, Laurie Cowart. Carole Morrison, Anita Scott, Heather Campbell and Sharon Herridge. Guests attending were Dr. Tasleem Katchi and Roger Lockhart from WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center and Doreen Martin.

Katchi was the main speaker and spoke on cardiovascular health and raising awareness about heart disease. Martin, a patient, talked about her experience with a heart attack.

Lockhart distributed a handout, “7 Steps To A Healthier HEART,” and brought gift bags for members.

Richards, Hoffman and Morrison delivered $800 in supplies to the Veterans Hospital in Clarksburg for Christmas and 80 treat bags of candy were given to veterans in Parkersburg.

Alegria Horton from Parkersburg South High School was awarded $1,000 as the James Wood Chapter 1st place winner in the Good Citizen Essay Contest. Micha Bennet from Parkersburg Christian High School, Stella Allison Dunn from Wood County Christian School and Rickie Eugene Allen from Williamstown High School were awarded $100 Participant Awards. Richards sent information to Parkersburg Catholic High School, Parkersburg High School and Wood County Christian for the American Patriot Essay Contest and no essays were received.

The Ellen Scott Stewart Scholarship Committee awarded $750 scholarships for the spring 2023 semester to Keith Eckel, Meghan Jefferson, Kendall Dominic, Ethan Rutherford, Ben Vierheller, Ellie Mommessin, Gabriel Ray, and Hannah Kinzer.

The next meeting will be held 11 a.m. March 4 at Stout Memorial Church.
