PARKERSBURG -- A 97-year-old Wood County woman was one of 10 people whose deaths were attributed to COVID-19 in Tuesday's update from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
She was the oldest of the individuals listed, with the youngest a 54-year-old man from Raleigh County.
That brings the total number of COVID deaths in the state to 7,344 during the two-and-half-year pandemic.
"Every life lost is one too many," DHHR Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "Protect your loved ones by scheduling your vaccine or booster today."
The number of active cases decreased again to 2,654, after tallying 2,932 on Monday. State officials have said that might not reflect the actual number of cases as people testing at home may not report positive results to local health departments.
Active cases in local counties mostly decreased Tuesday, with a couple of exceptions. Totals for Tuesday (Monday) were: Calhoun, 6 (5); Doddridge, 2 (7); Gilmer, 11 (14); Jackson, 13 (25); Pleasants, 3 (8); Ritchie, 3 (4); Roane, 39 (50); Tyler, 15 (13); Wetzel, 26 (40); Wirt, 4 (5); Wood, 66 (92).
Roane County remained gold on the County Alert System map, which measures spread of the virus based on the rate of new infections per 100,000 people or percentage of tests that come back positive, both in the preceding seven days.
A color ranging from green, lowest, to red, highest, is assigned baked on the lower of the two metrics.
Gold is in the middle of the scale, where Roane and three other countries landed Tuesday. Most other Mid-Ohio Valley counties were green, except for Calhoun, Gilmer and Tyler at yellow, second lowest.
Overall hospitalizations with COVID statewide increased from 300 to 311, with patients in intensive care units (58) and on ventilators (13) remaining the same. There were 10 pediatric hospitalizations, with one in ICU and one on a ventilator.
