Smoot Theatre keys up youth vocal group auditions

PARKERSBURG — The Smoot Theatre Vocal Ensembles will hold auditions for all three of its youth vocal groups at 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Ensembles are the Children’s Chorus for boys and girls in grades 4, 5 and 6, the Girls Ensemble for girls in grade 7 and up and the Boys Ensemble for boys in grade 7 and up.

Children are under the direction of Barbara Full, retired music instructor from Neale Elementary School, and accompanist is Marsha Parsons, a retired vocal music teacher at VanDevender Middle School.

The girls are under the direction of Cathy Martin, retired Parkersburg High School A Cappella Choir director, and the boys are under the direction of Janet Blessing, a retired vocal music instructor at Jackson Middle School.

All groups rehearse on Tuesdays throughout the school year: the children from 4:30-6 p.m.; girls from 5:30-7 p.m.; and boys from 7-8:30 p.m.

Auditions will consist of singing “Happy Birthday” and “Are You Sleeping” (all music provided) and matching pitches played on the piano. Auditions may be private or with a friend.

Also, auditioners may sing a song of their own choosing, bringing any music necessary for accompaniment. A parent must be present at the audition.

Auditions for the Girls and Boys Ensembles will consist of a check of vocal ranges and additional melodic and rhythmic exercises. No prepared solo is required. A parent must be present at the audition.

All auditions are held at the Smoot Theatre, 213 Fifth St.

For more information, call the Smoot Theatre at 304-422-PLAY. Anyone who cannot audition on the dates should call and request a different date and time.

The yearly fee is $25 for membership in the Smoot Ensembles.
