Relay for Life hits track at Belpre park to gain ground on cancer

Samantha Williams and mother Rhonda Blair participated in Saturday's Relay For Life held at Belpre Citivan Park and have volunteered their time and support to the Cancer Survivors tent for the past seven years after experiencing the loss of Rhonda’s father and Samantha’s grandfather, who passed away after a valiant battle with cancer. “Never take a single moment of life for granted, and cancer doesn’t mean the end, anyone who may be fighting for their life, please don’t give up,” Blair said. From left, Jackie Goodwill, Haley Hendershot, Tessa Hendershot, Michele Hendershot, and Addi Hendershot offered a variety of delicious desserts at their tent on Saturday at Belpre’s Civitan Park in hopes of contributing the proceeds to support The Cancer Society. Michele has founded the group known as Cancer Kickers and through their efforts, which include the sale of their signature desserts, have raised significant amounts of money that has been donated to The Cancer Society throughout the years, notably over $4500.00 in one year and have certainly inspired hope and determination, as well as the craving for their delicious oreo pudding, amongst the community. Despite the many loved ones claimed by cancer within their family, these women are grateful for the platform to inspire others with their genuine kindness and support. (Photo by Maria Rutherford)

BELPRE -- The annual Relay for Life held Saturday at Belpre's Civitan Park brought the community together, celebrating the victories of cancer survivors, and the community also paid tribute to those who fought the battle until the end of their lives.
Support networks are instrumental in aiding those afflicted by cancer. The community outreach and genuine kindness showcased through the efforts of the community represented what that kind of network should embody.
All in attendance enjoyed being part of a movement that continues to educate and inspire the masses through the efforts of volunteers and medical specialists.
Speakers were received well by attendees and included Tim Bonnette, Belpre Mayor Mike Lorentz, Dr. Kelli Cawley of Memorial Health Cancer Center, Michele George, grand marshal, as well as a representative from WVU Medicine Camden Clark.
Entertainment was provided by musical guests Rick Nicholson and High School that Rocks featured at the gazebo. A dinner was held for survivors at the shelter, and the event also included a live auction and luminary service with April Sampson officiating.
