Mid-Ohio Valley readies Fourth of July celebrations

PARKERSBURG — A number of activities are planned in the Mid-Ohio Valley around the Fourth of July holiday.

WOOD COUNTY

* The annual American Legion Post 15 Carnival and fireworks show will continue through Monday at City Park in Parkersburg with games, rides and concessions. Rides will be open 2-11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 1-11 p.m. Monday.

Half-day and full day ride passes are available for sale. Bingo will be held Saturday through Monday beginning at 2 p.m. each day.

This year’s fireworks will not be held at City Park but will instead be fired from Fort Boreman Park overlooking downtown Parkersburg at 10 p.m. Monday. The carnival and fireworks are sponsored by American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg.

* The Vienna Freedom Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Grand Central Mall in Vienna. Admission is free. The schedule of activities includes:

SATURDAY

– 10 a.m.: Veteran Parade

– 10:30 a.m.: Carnival Rides, Inflatables, Antique Car Show, Food Trucks, Black Hawk Helicopter, National Guard Display

– Noon: Beer Garden

– 7-9 p.m.: Hot Air Balloon Rides

– 7 p.m.: Music Performance

– 8:30 p.m.: Home Free

– 10:15p.m.: Fireworks

SUNDAY

– Noon: Carnival Rides, Inflatables, Food Trucks, Black Hawk Helicopter, National Guard Display

– 1 p.m.: Music Performances TBA

* Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park will be open for the Independence Day holiday on Monday, with a special bell-ringing ceremony at 2 p.m.

Boats to the island will depart Point Park in downtown Parkersburg between 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost of the boat ride is $12 for adults and $8 for children ages 3-12. The island features mansion tours, wagon rides, bike rentals, snack stand and a gift shop.

Boat tickets can be purchase at the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History at Second and Juliana streets in downtown Parkersburg. For more information, call the park office at 304-420-4800.

* The Williamstown Lions Club will hold its annual pancake breakfast from 7-11 a.m. Monday in Tomlinson Park in Williamstown. The cost is by donation and includes pancakes, sausage and drink. The money raised from the event benefits Lions community projects.

The Williamstown Lions Club is also hosting its annual Flags for Heroes in Tomlinson Park beginning with the dedication at noon Saturday that will include the reading of names and a presentation by the Geppetto Woodcarvers of carved walking sticks to some veterans. The flags will be on display through July 9.

* The annual North Hills Fourth of July Parade will be 11 a.m. Monday in North Hills.

Parade participants are asked to line up at the parking lot at the North Hills Swim and Racquet Club. The parade will start and end at the parking lot, where it will be followed by refreshments, games and activities. Prizes will be awarded for best floats and bicycles.

WASHINGTON

COUNTY

* Marietta’s annual Independence Day Parade and Celebration will begin at 11 a.m. Monday in downtown Marietta.

The parade route will begin at Fourth and Greene streets and follow Fourth, Putnam and Front streets, ending at the Armory Square. AMVETS Post 1788 is organizing the parade and will host a luncheon following the event from 12:30-3 p.m. at VFW Post 5108 on Pike Street.

* The Beverly Lions Club will sponsor its annual Antique Engine and Tractor Show from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday at Fort Frye High School in Beverly.

Antique engine and tractor clubs and individuals are welcome to participate. The Beverly Lions Club will serve food during the show and the fireworks. There will be drawings and raffle tickets for prizes. A flag raising will be held at 9 a.m. followed by a kids tractor pull at 11:30 a.m. and a tractor parade at 1 p.m. Food will be available all day, beginning with a pancake breakfast at the Beverly Fire Station from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.

The annual community fireworks display in Beverly will be presented at Cadet Field at Fort Frye High School, sponsored by American Legion Post 389, at 10 p.m. Monday.

WETZEL COUNTY

* In New Martinsville, the July Fourth tradition will continue with Arts in the Park from 1-4 p.m. Monday in Bruce Park. The event is sponsored by the New Martinsville Parks and Recreation Commission and ArtsLink.

Carman Harman will serve again as Master of Ceremonies. The event will feature arts and crafts demonstrations, along with exhibits by artists and craftspeople from Wetzel and Tyler counties in West Virginia and Monroe County, Ohio. The 40+ Band will provide music and the New Martinsville Parks and Recreation Commission will provide frozen treats and cold beverages. Magnus’ Magnificent Balloons will be on hand. All activities during the day are free. Food will also available for purchase.

JACKSON COUNTY

* The Ripley Fourth of July Celebration, which began Wednesday, will continue through Monday in downtown Ripley.

The Class Act will be 7 p.m. today on the courthouse lawn. It serves as an all-class reunion for Ripley High graduates, spouses and friends.

A pair of performances will be Saturday. Morgan White will perform at 4 p.m. on the Constellium Stage, followed at 7 p.m. by Bluegrass Gospel Night, featuring three bands from across the region.

The U-Turn concert will be 6:30 p.m. Sunday, providing contemporary Christian rock music.

On Monday, activities begin with a 7 a.m. pancake breakfast at Calvary United Methodist Church (by donation); the Little Patriot Hour at 9 a.m. with activities and entertainment for children; Opening Ceremonies at 10 a.m.; the Firecracker 2-Mile Race at 11:30 a.m.; the Sheetz Grand Parade at noon; Kids On First at 2 p.m.: Kurt Shultis at 3 p.m.; Track 9 at 4 p.m.: Ultra Sound at 6 p.m.; Rick K and the Allnighters at 8 p.m.; and ending with fireworks at 10 p.m.

Myers Amusements will be providing carnival rides and attractions on the Ripley Municipal Parking Lot through Sunday between 6-10 p.m. daily. On Monday, the carnival hours will be 2-6 p.m. and 6-10 p.m. Hand stamps are $25. The carnival is a fundraiser of the Ripley Volunteer Fire Department.
